ATP production
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the main energy currency of cells. It’s produced primarily through a process called cellular respiration, where cells break down nutrients like glucose in the presence of oxygen. This process occurs mainly in the mitochondria, the cell’s powerhouses. As glucose is gradually broken down, energy is released and captured to synthesize ATP molecules. These molecules store energy temporarily, which cells then use for everything from muscle movement to nerve signals. When ATP is used, it releases energy and becomes ADP, ready to be recycled into new ATP molecules.
