Atlas bone
The atlas bone is the first cervical vertebra in the spine, located just below the skull. It plays a crucial role in supporting the head and allowing a wide range of motion, such as nodding and shaking the head. Named after the Greek myth of Atlas, who held up the world, this bone helps bear the weight of the skull. It articulates with the occipital bone of the skull, forming the atlanto-occipital joint, which enables movement. Its unique structure distinguishes it from other vertebrae, facilitating the upper spine's flexibility and stability.
