C1 vertebra
The C1 vertebra, also called the atlas, is the topmost bone in the neck that supports your skull. It allows you to nod your head “yes” by enabling a range of motion between the skull and the neck. Unlike other vertebrae, the atlas doesn’t have a typical body or spinous process. Instead, it is ring-shaped, forming a space for the spinal cord to pass through. Its unique structure works together with the second cervical vertebra (the axis) to enable head rotation. The atlas plays a crucial role in neck movement and stability, safeguarding the connection between your skull and spine.
