Assata Shakur (Joanne Chesimard)

Assata Shakur, born Joanne Chesimard in 1947, is an African American activist and former member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. In 1973, she was convicted of killing a New Jersey state trooper during a shootout. After serving years in prison, she escaped to Cuba in 1979, where she was granted political asylum. Shakur is considered a symbol of resistance against systemic racism and oppression, and she remains a controversial figure in American history. In 2013, the FBI added her to its list of Most Wanted Terrorists, citing her continued activism and influence.
