Assata Shakur

Assata Shakur is an African American activist and former member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. Born in 1947, she was involved in the civil rights movement and sought justice for racial inequality. In 1973, she was convicted of murder and other charges surrounding a police shootout, but she maintained her innocence. In 1979, she escaped from prison and sought asylum in Cuba, where she still resides. Shakur has become a symbol for some in the fight against systemic racism and oppression, while others view her as a controversial figure linked to radical activism.
