Article 51 (UN Charter)

Article 51 of the UN Charter recognizes the right of countries to defend themselves if they are attacked. It allows nations to use force to protect themselves individually or collectively, meaning they can co-operate with allies in response to an armed attack. However, this self-defense must be reported to the UN Security Council, which can lead to further actions to maintain peace. Essentially, while countries have the right to protect themselves, they must also keep the wider international community informed about their actions.
