Apache Harmony
Apache Harmony was an open-source project aimed at creating a compatible implementation of the Java platform. Launched by the Apache Software Foundation in 2006, it sought to provide an alternative to Sun Microsystems’ Java Development Kit (JDK) while maintaining compatibility with Java applications. Harmony included its own Java virtual machine and libraries but was ultimately discontinued in 2011 due to a variety of challenges, including licensing issues and the rise of other Java implementations. It played a role in the broader conversation about open-source software and the importance of compatibility in software development.
