Amphora
An amphora is a large, ancient clay vessel used for storing and transporting liquids, especially wine and olive oil. Characterized by its narrow neck and two handles, it was commonly used in Mediterranean cultures from about 1500 BC onward. The design helped with pouring and sealing the contents. Amphorae often featured decorative artwork and inscriptions that indicated their contents and origin. Archaeologists study amphorae to learn about trade, food practices, and ancient cultures, as they provide insight into the economy and daily life of historical societies.
