American Viticultural Area (AVA)
An American Viticultural Area (AVA) is a designated wine grape-growing region in the United States, recognized for its unique climate, soil, and geographical features that impact grape quality and flavor. Established by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), AVA status helps consumers identify where a wine's grapes are sourced. Each AVA has distinct characteristics, and wines produced from grapes grown in a specific AVA may have unique qualities that reflect their origin. Notable examples of AVAs include Napa Valley and Sonoma County, both in California.
