Alexander Cunningham
Alexander Cunningham (1814-1893) was a British archaeologist and a pioneering figure in the study of Indian archaeology. Often regarded as the "Father of Indian Archaeology," he was instrumental in cataloging and preserving ancient sites and monuments in India, particularly during British colonial rule. He founded the Archaeological Survey of India in 1861, promoting systematic excavation and research. Cunningham’s work significantly contributed to the understanding of India’s historical heritage, including Buddhist sites and ancient inscriptions, helping to document the rich tapestry of Indian history and culture for future generations.
