African Plate

The African Plate is a large tectonic plate that covers much of Africa and parts of the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the Earth's major plates and is bordered by the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to the west, where it meets the South American Plate. This plate plays a significant role in the geology of the region, influencing earthquakes and volcanic activity. The East African Rift, where the plate is slowly splitting apart, is a key geological feature, leading to the creation of rift valleys and unique geological formations in that area. Its movement shapes the continent's landscape.
