Aburi Accord
The Aburi Accord was a political agreement signed in Nigeria in 1967 between the federal government and the eastern region, led by the Igbo people. It aimed to create an autonomous, self-governing Eastern Region while remaining part of Nigeria, to address local demands for independence and resource control. The agreement sought to reduce tensions and prevent full secession, but it was not fully implemented. Its failure contributed to increasing conflicts, ultimately leading to the Nigerian Civil War (Biafran War). The accord was an important step in Nigeria's complex process of federalism and regional autonomy.
