477th Composite Group
The 477th Composite Group was a U.S. military unit during World War II, notable for being one of the first combat units composed of African American pilots and aircrew. Activated in 1944, it aimed to train and prepare Black service members for roles in the Army Air Forces at a time when segregation was prevalent. The group made significant contributions to the war effort, including flying missions in Italy, and its existence helped pave the way for the integration of the U.S. military. The 477th is remembered for its role in advancing civil rights within the armed forces.
