1783 Balloon Flight
In 1783, the Montgolfier brothers, Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne, launched the first successful hot air balloon flight in France. Their balloon was made of paper and cloth and was filled with hot air from a fire at its base. On June 4, 1783, the brothers sent a balloon into the air for about 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) and reached an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters (3,300 feet). This landmark event sparked interest in ballooning, leading to the development of early aviation and inspiring further experiments with flight, including manned missions and advancements in aerodynamics.
