11th President of the United States
The 11th President of the United States, James K. Polk, served from 1845 to 1849. He was a member of the Democratic Party and is best known for expanding the nation’s territory through the acquisition of new lands, including California and parts of the Southwest, following the Mexican-American War. Polk was a strong proponent of Manifest Destiny, the belief that the U.S. was destined to expand across the continent. His presidency focused on territorial growth and reducing tariffs, but he chose not to seek re-election after one term, fulfilling his promise to accomplish specific goals during his administration.
