Zero Tolerance Policies

Zero tolerance policies are strict guidelines that mandate predetermined consequences for certain behaviors, often without discretion or consideration of individual circumstances. Commonly applied in schools, workplaces, and law enforcement, these policies aim to deter undesirable actions, such as violence or substance abuse, by enforcing consistent penalties. For example, if a student is caught with drugs, they might face automatic expulsion, regardless of context. While intended to promote safety and accountability, critics argue that zero tolerance can lead to unintended consequences, such as disproportionately harsh punishments and a lack of opportunity for rehabilitation or understanding of the situation.
