Zapotec society

Zapotec society, originating in Mexico’s Oaxaca region, was a sophisticated ancient civilization known for advanced architecture, writing, and art. They organized into city-states ruled by rulers and priests, with a strong emphasis on religion and community. Agriculture, especially maize cultivation, was vital. Social roles were clearly defined, and they developed a complex calendar and a writing system using symbols. Zapotec society valued education, craftsmanship, and religious rituals. Their achievements influenced later Mesoamerican cultures, and their descendants, the Zapotec people, continue to maintain cultural traditions today.
