Zanzibar Revolution

The Zanzibar Revolution occurred in January 1964 when a violent uprising overthrew the Arab-dominated government of Zanzibar, a Tanzanian island. Led by mainly African revolutionaries, it was fueled by longstanding racial and political tensions, economic disparities, and resentment against Arab dominance. The revolution resulted in the establishment of a new government, ending centuries of Arab influence, and led to the union of Zanzibar with mainland Tanganyika, forming Tanzania. It marked a significant shift towards African-led governance and independence, reshaping the island’s social and political landscape.
