Yoshiwara
Yoshiwara was a famous red-light district in Edo (Tokyo) from the 17th to early 20th century. It was a licensed area where licensed courtesans and prostitutes provided companionship and entertainment, often associated with refined arts like music and dance. The district was culturally influential, developing its own styles and traditions, and was subject to regulation by authorities. While primarily known for its prostitution, Yoshiwara also became a social and artistic hub, inspiring many ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) and stories. It operated until the early 20th century, when modernization and legal reforms led to its decline.
