YIVO (Yidisher Visnshaftlekher Institut)

YIVO, short for Yidisher Visnshaftlekher Institut (Yiddish Scientific Institute), is an organization dedicated to research, preservation, and education about Jewish history, culture, language, and literature, particularly focusing on the Yiddish-speaking communities. Founded in 1925 in Vilna (Vilnius), it has since established headquarters in New York City. YIVO conducts scholarly studies, archives and publishes materials, and promotes understanding of Jewish traditions and experiences.
