X-linked CGD
X-linked chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a genetic condition primarily affecting males, where the body's immune cells struggle to fight certain bacteria and fungi. This happens because of a mutation in a gene on the X chromosome that impairs a protein needed for producing reactive molecules to kill invading microbes. As a result, individuals with X-linked CGD experience recurrent infections and form granulomas—growths of immune cells trying to contain infections—that can cause tissue problems. Since the condition is inherited through the X chromosome, males are usually affected, while females may carry the gene without symptoms.
