Women's Naval Reserve

The Women's Naval Reserve, often referred to as the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), was established during World War II to allow women to serve in non-combat roles within the U.S. Navy. Created in 1942, it aimed to free up men for combat positions by utilizing women in various supportive duties such as administration, communications, and logistics. WAVES members contributed significantly to the war effort, helping to change perceptions of women’s roles in the military and opening pathways for future female service in the armed forces. The program became a vital component of naval operations during the war.
