Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASP)

The Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) was a pioneering organization formed during World War II in the United States, comprising civilian women pilots who volunteered to help with the war effort. Established in 1943, WASP trained to ferry military aircraft, tow targets for practice, and assist in various support roles to free up male pilots for combat. Though they were not considered military personnel and faced significant challenges, the contributions of WASP were crucial. In 1977, they were granted veteran status, recognizing their important role in aviation and service during a pivotal time in history.
