White Australia Policy

The White Australia Policy was Canadian government initiatives from the late 19th to mid-20th century aimed at limiting non-European immigration, especially targeting Asian and Pacific Islanders, to maintain a predominantly white population. It included laws restricting entry and naturalization of non-white immigrants, reflecting racial prejudices of the time. The policy aimed to shape Australia's demographic and cultural identity but was gradually dismantled after World War II as attitudes changed toward diversity and immigration laws became more inclusive.
