Western diamondback rattlesnake

The Western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) is a venomous snake native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Recognizable by its distinct diamond-shaped pattern along its back and a rattle at the tail's end, it uses this rattle as a warning signal. Typically growing 3 to 5 feet long, it primarily hunts small mammals and lizards, using its venom to subdue prey. While its bite can be serious, it usually occurs only if threatened or accidentally stepped on. The snake plays an important role in controlling pest populations and is a vital part of its ecosystem.
