West Indies Federation constitution
The West Indies Federation was a political union of several Caribbean islands aiming for independence from Britain. Its constitution established a centralized government with a Prime Minister and a federal Parliament representing member states. Powers were divided between the federal government and the individual nations, with the federation handling defense, foreign affairs, and economic policies. Each member retained some autonomy, especially in local matters. Established in 1958, it sought unity and cooperation, but faced challenges like differing national interests and internal disagreements. The federation ultimately dissolved in 1962, with members gaining independence separately.
