West Berlin

West Berlin was the western part of Berlin during the Cold War, controlled by West Germany and allied with Western countries like the U.S., the UK, and France. After World War II, Germany was divided, and Berlin, located within East Germany, was also split. West Berlin became a symbol of Western democratic values and economic strength, existing as an enclave surrounded by East German territory. It was an isolated city with special status, served as a refuge for those fleeing East Germany, and was marked by the Berlin Wall (1961–1989), which separated it from East Berlin and symbolized Cold War tensions.
