Water bear
Water bears, also known as tardigrades, are tiny, resilient creatures measuring about 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters. They have segmented bodies and eight legs with claws. Remarkably hardy, they can survive extreme conditions such as freezing, boiling, high radiation, and the vacuum of space. They achieve this by entering a state called cryptobiosis, where they lose almost all their water content and suspend their metabolism. Found in moss, lichens, and freshwater environments worldwide, water bears are fascinating examples of life's adaptability and resilience.
