War of the Sicilian Vespers
The War of the Sicilian Vespers (1282–1302) was a conflict between the Kingdom of Sicily, controlled by the French Capetian dynasty, and the Kingdom of Naples and broader Latin Christian states. It started with a popular uprising, known as the Vespers, against French rule in Sicily. The rebellion led to much violence and shifted control, with the Sicilian rebels seeking independence or to replace French rulers with the native Aragonese. Over two decades, the war involved various alliances and battles, ultimately resulting in Sicily becoming a separate Aragonese kingdom, while the mainland remained under different rulers, shaping Mediterranean politics for years.
