War of the Nippon
The War of the Nippon, also known as the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), was a conflict between China and Japan over control of Korea and influence in East Asia. Japan sought to expand its power and modernize by gaining regional dominance, challenging China's long-standing influence. The war ended with a decisive Japanese victory, resulting in the Treaty of Shimonoseki, whereby China ceded Taiwan, Korea's independence (with Japanese influence), and control of other territories. This war marked Japan's emergence as a major imperial power and signaled shifts in regional balance, reducing Chinese dominance and opening new opportunities for Japanese expansion.
