War Measures Act

The War Measures Act was a law in Canada that gave the government special powers to maintain national security during times of war or emergency. It allowed the government to take actions like arresting people, shutting down businesses, or controlling resources without some of the usual legal restrictions. Enacted in 1914 and used during major conflicts, it was designed to quickly respond to threats, but also raised concerns about individual rights. The Act was replaced in 1988 by the Emergencies Act, which provides clearer limits and protections in emergencies.
