War elephants
War elephants were large Asian or African elephants used in battle by ancient armies. These massive animals served as both a psychological weapon and a means of direct combat, trampling enemies and charging through ranks. They were typically trained to carry soldiers, weapons, or supplies, and sometimes wore armor for protection. War elephants were employed by various cultures, including the Persians, Indians, and Carthaginians, particularly during wars from around 300 BCE to 100 CE. Their effectiveness waned with the development of new military tactics and the advent of firearms, leading to their decline as a battlefield presence.
