Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI)

The Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) is a scale that measures how powerful a volcanic eruption is. It considers factors like the amount of ash and tephra (solid volcanic material) ejected, the height of the eruption plume, and how long the eruption lasts. Ranging from 0 (non-explosive) to 8 (colossal), the VEI helps compare eruptions from small, ash-producing events to massive, world-changing ones like the eruption of Mount Tambora. It provides a standardized way for scientists to understand and communicate the severity of volcanic events.
