Vieques protests

The Vieques protests were a series of demonstrations by residents and activists against the U.S. Navy's military exercises on Vieques, Puerto Rico. For decades, the Navy used parts of the island for bombing and testing, which caused environmental damage and health issues for locals. Protesters demanded the end of military activities to protect community health and the environment. After years of activism, the U.S. Navy finally withdrew in 2003, leading to increased efforts to restore and repopulate Vieques. The movement highlighted issues of environmental justice and sovereignty, gaining significant national and international attention.
