Vicksburg Campaign

The Vicksburg Campaign was a key Civil War military operation in 1863 aimed at gaining control of the Mississippi River. Union forces, led by General Ulysses S. Grant, surrounded and besieged the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, Mississippi. This strategic city controlled access to the river, vital for transportation and supply routes. After months of siege and continuous assaults, Vicksburg surrendered on July 4, 1863. The victory split the Confederacy in two, boosting Union morale and significantly advancing their goal of controlling the Mississippi River, which was a major turning point in the Civil War.
