Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata
The Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata was a large administrative region of the Spanish Empire in South America, established in 1776. It covered present-day Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and parts of Bolivia and Brazil. Its purpose was to better control and organize the territory, facilitate trade, and strengthen defenses against invasions. The capital was Buenos Aires. Over time, it became a center of economic activity and cultural exchange, eventually playing a key role in regional independence movements in the early 19th century.
