Vibrio cholerae
Vibrio cholerae is a type of bacteria that causes cholera, a severe diarrheal disease. It is usually transmitted through contaminated water or food, especially in areas with poor sanitation. When infected, individuals can experience rapid, large-volume diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and even death if not treated promptly. The bacteria produce a toxin that disrupts normal fluid balance in the intestines. Cholera can spread quickly in crowded or unsanitary conditions, but it is preventable through proper sanitation, clean water, and rehydration therapy during infection. Vaccines are also available for prevention.
