VHL (von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor)

VHL, or von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor, is a gene that helps control cell growth and prevent tumors. It produces a protein that regulates blood vessel formation and keeps cell growth in check. When the VHL gene is mutated or not working properly, cells can grow uncontrollably, leading to tumors and cysts in various parts of the body, especially in the brain, spinal cord, kidneys, and eyes. This condition, called von Hippel-Lindau disease, is inherited and increases the risk of developing certain cancers. The VHL protein plays a crucial role in maintaining normal cell behavior and preventing abnormal growth.
