Ventricular Assist Device (VAD)
A Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) is a mechanical pump that helps the heart pump blood when it’s too weak to do so effectively. It is usually implanted inside the chest and connected to the heart and a power source. VADs are used for patients with severe heart failure, either as a bridge to transplant, recovery, or as a long-term solution. They support circulation by taking over part of the heart’s work, improving blood flow and organ function, and helping patients live longer and better quality lives while awaiting a heart transplant or as a permanent therapy.
