Vasyugan Mire
Vasyugan Mire is one of the largest peat bogs in the world, located in southwestern Siberia, Russia. It spans thousands of square kilometers and consists mainly of waterlogged, organic-rich soil called peat. This wetland acts as a significant carbon sink, storing vast amounts of carbon from plant material that decomposed slowly over thousands of years. The mire supports diverse wildlife and influences regional climate and hydrology. Due to climate change, melting permafrost and altered water patterns threaten its stability, potentially releasing stored carbon and impacting global greenhouse gas levels.
