van 't Hoff (Jakob Hendrik van 't Hoff)
Jakob Hendrik van 't Hoff was a Dutch chemist known for his foundational contributions to physical chemistry in the late 19th century. He is best recognized for formulating the concept of chemical kinetics, which studies the rates of chemical reactions, and for introducing the principles of chemical equilibrium. Van 't Hoff also developed the ideal gas law and contributed to the understanding of osmosis and the behavior of solutions. In 1901, he became the first recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, highlighting his significant impact on the field and setting the stage for modern chemical science.
