V2 receptor
The V2 receptor is a specific protein found in kidney cells that responds to a hormone called vasopressin (or antidiuretic hormone). When vasopressin binds to the V2 receptor, it signals the kidneys to reabsorb more water from urine back into the bloodstream. This process helps regulate the body's water balance and blood pressure. V2 receptors are important in maintaining hydration, and their malfunction can lead to issues like dehydration or overhydration. They are also targeted by certain medications that treat conditions such as diabetes insipidus and certain types of hyponatremia.
