USS Maine
The USS Maine was a U.S. naval ship sent to protect American interests in Havana, Cuba, during the Spanish-American War era. In 1898, it mysteriously exploded and sank in Havana Harbor, resulting in the deaths of over 260 sailors. Although the exact cause remains debated, many Americans blamed Spain, fueling tensions and contributing to the outbreak of the war. The incident became a rallying cry with the phrase “Remember the Maine,” symbolizing U.S. unity and justification for military action against Spain.
