United Nations Decolonization Committee

The United Nations Decolonization Committee, officially known as the Special Committee on Decolonization, was established in 1961 to support countries seeking independence from colonial rule. Its role is to review the progress of decolonization worldwide, promote self-determination, and facilitate peaceful transitions to independence. It works with territories still under colonial control, encouraging political, social, and economic development. While it provides guidance and advocacy, the actual process of independence depends on the will of the people in those territories and international agreements. The committee helps ensure that the right to self-governance is respected and upheld.
