United Irishmen
The United Irishmen was a revolutionary organization founded in 1791 in Ireland, aiming to unite Catholics, Protestants, and others to achieve national independence from Britain and establish equality for all religious groups. Inspired by Enlightenment ideas and the French Revolution, they sought to challenge existing political and social inequalities through protests and, ultimately, an uprising. Their efforts led to the 1798 Irish Rebellion, a significant, though unsuccessful, attempt to establish an independent Irish republic. The United Irishmen played a key role in Ireland's struggle for self-determination and reflected broader themes of national identity and social unity.
