United Bulgarian Exarchate
The United Bulgarian Exarchate was an autonomous religious institution established in 1870 by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, seeking independence from the Greek Patriarchate of Constantinople. It aimed to promote Bulgarian national identity and culture through religious authority, education, and ecclesiastical independence in Ottoman-ruled territories. Its creation marked a significant step toward Bulgaria's national awakening and independence movement, fostering a sense of unity among Bulgarians. The Exarchate served as both a religious and cultural institution, helping to strengthen Bulgarian language, traditions, and national consciousness until its dissolution after Bulgaria's independence in the early 20th century.
