Union of Utrecht

The Union of Utrecht, signed in 1579, was an agreement among several Dutch provinces to unite in resisting Spanish rule during the Dutch Revolt. It established a loose alliance, affirming religious tolerance and mutual support while maintaining local independence. This union laid the foundation for the independent Dutch Republic, marking a significant step toward political and religious unity among the northern Dutch provinces as they sought self-governance and freedom from foreign control.
