uncoupling proteins

Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are specialized proteins found in the energy-producing structures within cells called mitochondria. They help regulate how your body burns calories by allowing protons, which normally drive the production of energy, to bypass this process and release as heat instead. This process, called "uncoupling," can influence body temperature and energy expenditure. UCPs play roles in maintaining body temperature in cold conditions, protecting against excess reactive molecules, and may impact weight management. They are an important part of how the body balances energy production and heat generation.
