Unceded Territory

Unceded territory refers to land that Indigenous peoples have historically occupied, managed, or used exclusively, and that has not been legally surrendered or ceded through treaties or agreements with colonial governments. Recognizing unceded territory acknowledges Indigenous sovereignty, rights, and connection to the land. These areas often remain formally under Indigenous authority, emphasizing the importance of respecting their ongoing relationship with the land and the legal and cultural significance of their stewardship.
