Ulster Defence Regiment
The Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) was a British Army unit established in 1970 to help maintain security and order in Northern Ireland during a period of conflict known as The Troubles. Comprising mostly local recruits, it aimed to assist law enforcement and protect communities affected by violence between unionists and nationalists. The regiment played a key role in counter-terrorism efforts until it was merged into the Royal Irish Regiment in 1992. Throughout its existence, the UDR worked to promote stability, although it also faced criticism and controversy related to its interactions during this turbulent period.
